Mascot costumes: what drives the price
A custom mascot costume typically costs $1,500–3,500 (USD) and can pass $6,000. A t-shirt-and-cape costume is cheap by comparison. The difference is engineering. A mascot has to be worn for an hour, seen through, and breathed in.
The main cost drivers
The head. This is often 40–50% of the cost. A foam-carved head with a fabric skin takes days of shaping and patterning. A moulded head is dearer still. Big eyes, moving mouths and ears that hold their shape all add hours.
Sight and airflow. The wearer needs a clear line of sight, usually through mesh hidden in the mouth or eyes. Fans and vents add cost and battery pieces, but a mascot with no airflow is unsafe to wear for long.
Fur and fabric. Long-pile faux fur costs $20–50 a metre and needs careful cutting. Felt, fleece and printed fabrics are cheaper. Colour matching a logo takes sampling, which takes time.
The body. A full suit needs a padded torso, arms, gloves, feet and often a tail. Each is a separate pattern. Cheaper builds skip padding, and it shows.
Fit and shared use. A costume for one person is cut to them. A costume for several wearers needs adjustable straps and liners. Say who will wear it.
Deadline. Typical turnaround is 8–12 weeks. Under six weeks is a rush and often adds 30–50%.

- Logo or character art, front, side and back.
- Wearer height, and whether more than one person will wear it.
- How long the wearer will be in costume and whether it is outdoors.
- Whether it needs hands free, or to hold props.
- Deadline and budget range.
Ways to reduce the price
Simplify the design. Choose shorter fur. Keep the head fixed instead of animated. Use a face-out design instead of a full head. Ask makers to quote two versions and compare.
Check the portfolio
Look for finished mascots photographed being worn, not only on a stand. Ask how the wearer sees and how they stay cool.
