Custom vs rental for a school production: the real cost for a cast of 12
Renting looks cheaper until you add up everything around the rental fee. Here is a worked example for a cast of 12 in a two-weekend school production of a period play.

The custom price assumes a group order, which usually cuts 15–30% off the single-costume price. Simple designs, cotton or poly-blend, one pattern in several sizes.
What the numbers show
Rental is cheaper in year one, by about $600 in the middle of these ranges. Custom costs more upfront but you keep the costumes. If the school does a second production with the same pieces, or lends them to another class, custom wins by the second use.
Rental also has limits that are not in the table. Sizes are fixed, so children between sizes get poor fits. Colours and eras are whatever is on the rack. You cannot ask for a matching set.
When to rent
- One production, no reuse, and a stock look is fine.
- Fewer than eight weeks to go and no time for fittings.
- Complex pieces like armour or crowns, where rental fees are low.
When to commission
- You will reuse costumes for two or more productions.
- You need a specific design, colour or a matching cast.
- Children are between sizes and fit matters for movement.
- You can post at least eight weeks before opening night.
A middle route
Rent the hard pieces and commission the basics: tunics, skirts, aprons and vests. Or buy thrifted garments and pay a maker for alterations, usually a quarter to half of a new build.
